Kimono Umbrella 舞鶴 – Maitsuru
Part of the Kimono Umbrella collection, this Japanese umbrella design is Maitsuru (dancing crane). Crafted & upcycled from a traditional, antique Kimono that has been passed down through generations.
Product History
The purple backdrop on this parasol represents the wild night skies of Japan, setting it apart from other places.
Coated in a Vintage Kimono fabric, glass fibre body, and wooden handle, the vibrant purple sky on the Maitsuru represents the wild night skies of Japan. It mixed beautifully with the graceful movements of the cranes as they dance, creating a broad and majestic image, and adding a bespoke oriental design to the parasol. The colours invoke both enthusiasm and the majesty of the cranes. In Japanese culture, the Crane represents “PEACE” for life and symbolises good fortune and longevity. This is FURISODE which is a type of Kimono, made in the 1960s. FURISODE is the highest formal Kimono for unmarried women. The purpose of FURISODE is to wear on occasions such as graduations, New Year’s Day, and Coming of Age Day.
The canopy of the Maitsuru is made from 100% silk of a Kimono, meaning it’s not suitable for rain as it would damage the silk – however, as the theme of this umbrella, it is perfect for the sun, weighing approximately 310 grams. The origin of the Kimono can be traced as far back as the Heian Period over 1200 years ago, when straight cuts of the fabric were sewn together to create a garment that fits every body shape.
Enjoy the radiance and vibrancy of this fantastic 舞鶴 Maitsuru Kimono Umbrella on a hot summers day.

Kimono Collection: Sun parasols made from fabric cut from antique Kimono. The Kimono is a Japanese traditional formal costume. Still, due to fashion culture & trends changing, people don’t wear Kimonos as often as they used to, so they have been upcycled & hand-crafted into a beautiful umbrella. The Maitsuru is just one example of several Kimono’s that have been modified in beautiful brollies.
